According to reports from the celebrity news site Nicki Swift, when LeBron James discovered that his high school sweetheart Savannah James was pregnant, he responded by saying, “We will do what we need to do to make it work.” That response was admirable and showed a level of maturity and responsibility. However, it does not change the fact that their first child was conceived before they were married.
In modern times, many people are waiting longer to get married or start families. At the same time, studies often report that a large percentage of couples engage in premarital sex.
The concern is that premarital sex can introduce responsibilities and hardships before a couple is fully prepared to handle them. When looking at the early relationship between Savannah and LeBron, some reports suggest that they rushed into a serious relationship while they were still very young. Like many young couples, they faced adult responsibilities before they had the stability needed to build a home.
Biblical teachings often emphasize the importance of responsibility and honor within the family. In the Apocrypha, which is included in some editions of the King James Bible, there are passages that speak about the shame that could come upon a family when a young woman brought a child home before marriage. These passages highlight how seriously earlier societies viewed family structure and responsibility.
This does not mean that a child conceived outside of marriage is a mistake or that such a child should not be welcomed. Life is valuable, and many couples step up and take responsibility for their children. However, it does raise an important question about whether waiting for marriage could prevent certain hardships.
Today, cohabitation has become much more common. Yet living together before marriage does not necessarily remove the risk of deeper conflict. In some situations, it can leave women especially vulnerable if the relationship ends. When a man feels that he can leave without the commitment of marriage, the temptation to walk away from responsibility may be stronger.
The benefits of waiting until marriage include building a stronger foundation before bringing children into the world. When two people are emotionally, mentally, and spiritually prepared, they may be better positioned to receive the blessing of a child at the right time.
Scripture also emphasizes the importance of having a supportive partner during life’s most difficult moments. For example, the loss of a child through miscarriage can place enormous emotional strain on a woman and on the relationship itself. Having a committed spouse who is prepared to stand beside her during such times can make a profound difference.
Ultimately, strong families are built on commitment, responsibility, and mutual support. Waiting to build that foundation before introducing the responsibilities of parenthood may help couples create healthier and more stable homes.
